Knaresborough

Knaresborough is an ancient market town built on the slopes of the steep sided valley of the River Nidd, around three miles east of Harrogate and four miles west of the A1

Dominated by the ruined castle, the town has many attractions for visitors, including Mother Shipton's cave, the petrifying Dropping Well, the landscaped gardens of Conyngham Hall, the Courthouse Museum in the castle grounds and of course the Norman Castle itself. Also essential for any visitor is a stroll along 'Waterside', a lane that follows the north side of the river under the castle, and between an enourmous variety of buildings from all periods, including some which are built into the sandstone cliffs themselves

getting there (knaresborough) henshaws arts & crafts centre

... by train

From Harrogate or York: Knaresborough railway station is around a third of a mile from Henshaws. From the station walk a short way up Station Road, turning left onto the lane opposite the end of the station buildings. At the end of the lane turn left onto Vicarage Lane. Enter the church-yard and walk around the south side of the church. Leave the churchyard by The Parsonnage and follow it to Bond End. Walk up to the traffic island and cross (carefully!) to Henshaws

See if you can catch yourself complaining in either speech or thought, about a situation you find yourself in, what other people do or say, your surroundings, your life situation, even the weather. To complain is always non-acceptance of what is. It invariably carries an unconscious negative charge. When you complain, you make yourself a victim. Leave the situation or accept it
Eckhart Tolle

... by bus

Bus 1A/1B/1C: These Harrogate & District busses provide a regular service between Harrogate and Knaresborough, every 7-8 minutes on Saturdays and every 20 minutes on Sundays. If travelling from Harrogate alight at the 'Henshaws' stop - immediately outside Henshaws. If travelling towards Harrogate, alight at either the 'Council Offices' stop and walk down the hill, or the 'High Bridge' stop and walk back across the bridge and up the hill (both stops are around 300 yards from Henshaws)

... by car

From West/South (Harrogate/Leeds): Take the eastbound A59 Knaresborough Road from Harrogate into Knaresborough (approx 2.5 miles). After crossing the bridge over the River Nidd, Henshaws is the second turning on the left

From North (Ripon): Take the A61 south towards Harrogate. Turn left onto the B6165 at the second Ripley roundabout and continue into Knaresborough (approx 4.5 miles). At the T junction with the A59 (traffic lights) turn right towards Harrogate - Henshaws is the second turning on the right after approximately 200 yards

From East (York and the A1): Follow the A59 from York, or join the A59 at Junction 47 of the A1(M), in the direction of Harrogate. At the first roundabout after the A1 (approx 2.3 miles) take the third exit, signposted Knaresborough A59, and follow its course through the centre of Knaresborough. Keep left at the junction with Boroughbridge Road (A6055) (traffic lights) and straight on down the hill at the next set of traffic lights (junction with the B6165) - Henshaws is the second turning on the right (approx 200 yards beyond the B6165)

Free parking is generally available in Henshaws own car park. However if the car park is full, Conyngham Hall pay and display car park is very close (the next turning down the hill, adjacent to the river) and currently costs £3.00 per day (includes weekends)

There is no convenient on-street parking local to Henshaws
